The Craft of Fashion Design - Day and Evening Classes! Ages 16 to Adult

Learn the art and craft of fashion design.  Explore fabric selection and construction methods to create finished garments along with surface design techniques and embellishment. You will be able to complete an entire design by the end of the sessions.  In-class projects, simple pattern layout and basic sewing techniques will be integrated into the session as well as lots if individual attention. Sewing machine and some tools provided. Students to provide fabric and notions. Level: All. Repeating students are welcome to work on more advanced projects. (6 weeks)

Jewelry Design Foundations

Jewelry Design Foundations is a course designed for students with NO prior metal working experience.  You will learn traditional metalsmithing techniques including sawing, piercing, forming, silver soldering, riveting, surface embellishment, and finishing.  Knowledge of these techniques will allow you to pursue your own individual expression as unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry.  Tools, some metal and basic supplies provided.  Level:  Beginner (6 weeks)

Stackable Bangles Workshop

Students will twist, hammer and bend their very own sets of sterling silver rings.  We will talk about ring sizing and forging techniques as well as finishing and polishing.  Each student will make a few practice bracelets in copper then move on to make their bangles in silver toned metal and gold toned metal.  Each student will leave with a stack of bangles!

Felting on the Ball – Make a Hat with Ruth Walker
Felting a hat can be a refreshingly short-term one day project, yielding something wonderful, wearable and unique. Artist Ruth Walker will teach you the "felt on a ball" technique, which allows for a great deal of control in the placement of color, design and several styling possibilities. After demonstrating the papier mache' layering technique, you will make your color choices from an array of hand-dyed Merino wool batts. Everyone will complete a unique felt hat, take it home to dry, and enjoy it forever!
 Note: Participants must be prepared to stand for long periods of time while working.

Ruth Walker's inspiration comes from the interactions of colors and textures and has taught many workshops both nationally and internationally. A juried artist member of The Best of Missouri Hands, Walker's award-winning work is featured at select shops and fine craft shows throughout the US. Ruth maintains a studio in Columbia, Missouri.

Dyeing Scarves with Natural Dyes
Learn to dye fabric the naturally with organic plant matter and non-toxic materials. In this workshop you will learn the process of natural dyeing from start to finish, using two different fixing techniques and two dye baths. You will leave with two unique scarves. Grace Kubilius is the 2014 Fiber Artist-in-Residence. (Free street parking in Grand Center on Sundays!)

Pearl Opportunities
Pearls have been used in jewelry for a very long time.  Come learn the numerous ways to incorporate them into your work.  We will discuss types of pearls and make pearl settings; we’ll learn to string them and create pearl chains with wire.  We will half drill them and enlarge the holes of predrilled pearls.  By the end of class you will begin to think of each new piece of jewelry as a pearl opportunity!  Level:  Intermediate to Advanced
