GALLERY SHOP :: DON STINSON
Stinson Studios is a family operated business located in rural Ontario, Canada. Don Stinson founded the studio over 25 years ago under the name Don Stinson Woodworks after his graduation from York University & Sheridan College’s School of Craft & Design. Since then the business has grown to include all members of the family.

The Stinson’s spend the majority of their lives either in their rural studio or deeper in the Canadian wilderness. Woodworking functions as their medium to communicate elements of their relationship with nature. Each finished piece represents a unique balance between the human desire to impose our will on nature and the individual character of the material. A successful balance breathes life into the final form.

“We prefer less-than-perfect wood for what we turn and carve, including spaulted (marked by decay) wood. We think these marginal materials are often more interesting. We purchase logging truck loads of wood or trade with a local farmer for pieces from their wood pile. We use a chainsaw to dissect the wood, then turn it on a heavy-duty handmade lathe.”

Each Don Stinson object is crafted from Canadian hardwood and is safe for use with foods as it is finished with vegetable oil and bees wax. Don's work has won many awards: three from the One of a Kind Craft Show in Toronto, where he's been selling for over 20 years, two from the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibit and two from the Ontario Arts Council.
