GALLERY SHOP :: SUSAN FLEMING

"I strive for simplicity of design in my jewelry." Susan creates two lines of jewelry in her Jackson, Wyoming studio. In her most recent body of work, "Japanese Chiyogami papers have been the focal point of my pieces instead of the traditional genstone. These hand silk screened papers, which often depict organic or geometric elements can be incredibly ornate. There were originally developed in the Edo period as woodblock prints and were used to enliven the interiors of farmhouses. I extract small scenes from these papers, set them in sterling silver and then protect them under a thin, waterproof layer of resin. Paper colors, patterns and the qualities of the metals are carefully considered when assembling these pieces.

In her brushed sterling silver and 14 karat line, "Cabachons of semiprecious stones rest in fine silver bezels on hammered gold disks, highlighting the natural beauty of the stone. Finely hammered wires creates a layered sculptural look and small diamonds lend a subtle sparkle in specific pieces. Clean and sophisticated these pieces seek a harmonious balance in materials and design. The smooth surfaces of silver and gold are gradually shaped with antique hammers. The pitted faces of these old tools leave a unique texture on the metal. Futhering the process, the gold is subjected to a repetitive process of heating and soaking to raise the color of the gold."
