Building Community through Craft: A New Chapter with Bryan Knicely
We are thrilled to share a recent feature from St. Louis Magazine highlighting our Executive Director, Bryan Knicely, and his vision for the future of Craft Alliance. Since stepping into the role, Bryan has been a champion for our mission to “enrich and empower communities through craft,” bringing over three decades of arts leadership back to the city he once called home.
A Return to St. Louis For Bryan, leading Craft Alliance is a full-circle moment. Having previously served in leadership at Laumeier Sculpture Park and taken ceramics classes right here at Craft Alliance, he understands the unique pulse of the St. Louis arts scene. His return marks a strategic focus on growth, sustainability, and deep community integration within the Delmar Maker District.
Craft as a Catalyst for Connection In the feature, Bryan emphasizes that craft is more than just making objects—it is a transformative tool for human connection. Whether it’s through our specialized studios—from the fiery heat of Blacksmithing to the intricate textures of our new Print & Paper Studio—Bryan’s goal is to ensure Craft Alliance remains a “social and intellectual hub” where everyone, from beginners to professional artists, feels they belong.
Innovation in the Delmar Maker District Our relocation to 5080 Delmar Blvd has allowed us to expand our reach and collaborate more closely with our neighbors. Bryan notes that being part of this vibrant district is essential to our identity, providing a space where innovation and ancient traditions live side-by-side. From youth portfolio-building in Crafting a Future to our Free Family Saturdays, the focus remains on making the arts accessible to all.
“I truly believe everyone is creative when they are encouraged and inspired,” Bryan shares. “Craft is deeply personal—it reflects who we are and weaves itself into the fabric of our identity.”
We invite you to read the full interview to learn more about Bryan’s background, his passion for the ‘maker’ movement, and what’s next for Craft Alliance as we continue to celebrate contemporary craft in the heart of St. Louis.
