Introduction to Cyanotype

Introduction to Cyanotype

July 21 - August 11

Cyanotype printing is a photographic printing process that uses a solution applied to a variety of substrates (including paper, fabric, wood, etc.) and exposing it to light, then rinsing it out with water to create beautiful, intense blue and white prints. The process is a very affordable way to create alternative photographic prints. In the class, I will demonstrate how to apply the solution to paper and fabric, expose it in sunlight, and then rinse out the solution. The first two classes, I will demonstrate the process of printing and students will create many prints. The last two classes, I will demonstrate how to tone the cyanotypes to make them look more like “van dyke brown” prints. I will teach the students how to bleach and then tone the cyanotypes so the print color ranges from a dark bluish brown color to a warm white. This is a very approachable printing technique that is versatile and immediate. Students will easily create 10-20 medium to large cyanotype prints. The students have the option to continue printing throughout all four classes and only tone one or some of their cyanotypes. This is a great summer activity that creates lovely art and harnesses the power of the sun at the same time.
