Meri Ellen Taylor

I had a very early start. I received my first piece of jewelry as a very small child. I can thank my cousin Marde… I began metalsmithing and making jewelry during high school; I was very fortunate to go to a school where Visual and Performing Arts were as important as academics and sports. I was able to take just about every Visual and Performing Arts class offered, and my Art teacher, Mr. Charles Crawford, was award-winning in every way. He was an amazing teacher and artist, inspiring all of us. And he did everything with the use of only one hand, including metalsmithing. (Regarding the quintessential St. Louis question of which high school I was so fortunate to attend doesn’t apply here…I’m originally from Kansas City).
Right after graduating from Mizzou, I was hired to teach English in a high school in StL. Not long after that I found Craft Alliance and continued learning my craft there for several years with incredible artist and teacher, Joe Muench. I joined the staff at CA in the early 90’s, only taking a short break to earn my Masters Degree at Maryville where I studied with yet another expert-artist-teacher, John Baltrushunas. Peppered in all those years were a number of hands-on workshops led by some real stars in the field…always a blast! It’s Art Camp for adults.
When I left my English teaching position, I continued as faculty at Craft Alliance, but that’s when I also went full-steam into my art as a second career. I rented studio space, started making a body of work, and applied for art shows (all over the place, but recently have focused more in central states). Et voilà.
