Step into the wood studio and build your skills from the ground up in this hands-on course designed for beginners. Over six weeks, you’ll learn how to safely and confidently use key tools and equipment—including the table saw, bandsaw, drill press, planer, jointer, and sanders—while creating functional woodworking projects. Students will explore the fundamentals of measuring, cutting, joinery, assembly, and finishing, gaining a solid understanding of wood properties, design planning, and shop safety. Projects may include small furniture, boxes, or trays, and each student will leave class with completed work and the foundational skills to pursue independent projects. Perfect for anyone new to woodworking or looking to strengthen their skills in a supportive studio environment.

Join us for an exclusive, ticketed artist demonstration with visiting artist Kimberly Winkle, offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at her creative process. Attendees will experience an in-depth demonstration as Winkle shares techniques, material choices, and insights from her studio practice. This intimate event provides a unique opportunity to engage with a leading contemporary artist and deepen your understanding of craft in action.

Kimberly Winkle:

A native of Oklahoma, Kimberly Winkle is a maker who creates furniture and objects using wood and paint; her work displays a balance of form, color and surface pattern.

She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including SOFA Chicago, Wanted Design NYC and the Architectural Digest Home Show.  Her work has been included in a number of publications, including Fine Woodworking, Woodworker, and Woodworker West magazines and the books 500 Tables, and 500 Chairs.

Winkle has been awarded several artist residencies, including the Windgate International Turning Exchange at the Museum for Art in Wood in Philadelphia, the Windgate Artist Residency at State University New York (SUNY) Purchase, Windgate Haystack Mountain School of Crafts Open Studio Residency, the Windgate Craft residency at the Vermont Studio Center, Anderson Ranch Art Center and at the Appalachian Center for Craft.  In 2011 she was awarded a State of Tennessee Individual Artist Award, the Society of Arts and Crafts (Boston) John D. Mineck furniture fellowship in 2014 and has been nominated for a USA Artist award.

Winkle is a Professor and Director of the School of Art, Craft & Design at Tennessee Technological University. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Art in Ceramics from the University of Oklahoma and a Master of Fine Art in Furniture Design from San Diego State University.  Her workshop teaching experience includes, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Penland School of Crafts, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Anderson Ranch Art Center, The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, Port Townsend School of Woodworking, John C. Campbell Folk School, Peters Valley School of Craft, and the Appalachian Center for Craft.

Craft your own beautiful and functional cutting boards in this beginner-friendly woodworking class! Over six weeks, students will learn essential woodworking skills including measuring, cutting, gluing, sanding, and finishing hardwoods to create both edge-grain and end-grain cutting boards.

With guidance from an experienced instructor, you'll explore woodshop safety, tool use (including planers, jointers, table saws, and sanders), and finishing techniques to enhance the natural beauty and durability of your boards. You’ll leave class with multiple completed pieces—perfect for your kitchen or as handmade gifts.

No prior woodworking experience is necessary. This is a great introduction to the tools and techniques of the wood studio.
