Description

"Why choose between papermaking and printmaking when you can do both? In this beginner-friendly six-week course, you’ll explore how these two art forms connect—creating your own handmade paper and then printing on it!

In the first half of the course, you’ll dive into papermaking, learning how to turn raw fibers into pulp using a Hollander beater (a machine that breaks down fibers into fine paper pulp). You'll master Western-style sheet forming, experiment with pigmented pulp (colored paper fibers), create shaped paper forms, and even incorporate watermarks (designs embedded into the paper).

The second half of the course introduces relief printmaking, where you'll carve an image into a surface, ink it up, and transfer it onto paper using a printing press. You'll learn about safe press operation, layering multiple colors, and, best of all—printing on the handmade paper you created earlier!

No experience is necessary—just bring your creativity and curiosity. By the end of the course, you’ll have a collection of unique prints on your own handcrafted paper!

Note: This workshop is for ages 16+. If you require special accommodation for this workshop, please contact grant.benoit@craftalliance.org. Papermaking is a wet process-- Craft Alliance provides aprons and nitrile gloves, but please wear closed-toed shoes that have grip and clothing that can get messy or stained."
