What do you get when you combine pieces of wood, glue and pressure?  A cutting board!!

From teaching artist Jeff Hornung:

In our Making Cutting Boards 4-week class, students learn the basics of wood joinery in order to create a series of mixed color and species cutting boards. This includes everything from wood selection and cutting wood strips to gluing, clamping and finishing.

We cover workshop safety, bandsaw use, thickness planing, edge routing, and gluing and clamping strategies. Students also use the scroll saw to make a solid board in an interesting shape, like the whale cutting board pictured above.

During the session, we will have a conversation about finishes for food use items. If time allows I will bring in some additional woodworking tools for students to try.

Whatever your skill level there’s always something fun happening in the Wood Studio! Check out classes here.

  1. Hi!!
Our homeschool group was looking for a wood making class in the fall. Do you have this class available in the daytimes on Tues or Thurs? Also, would it be possible to make a chess board instead of a cutting board? What are the age requirements and cost for this class?

    Thank you SO much!

    1. Hi Kelley!
The classes on our website are the only ones currently scheduled. But, I’m forwarding your message to our Education Manager, Grace Quinn, to talk to you about options for your homeschool group. You should hear from her sometime this week. Hope this helps! Also feel free to email me any time with other questions.
