Six contemporary artists explore narrative works in thread – stitch by stitch. The artists featured were selected because their works challenge conventional ideas about embroidery and explore the potential of this traditional art form to communicate their ideas. Michael Aaron McAllister depicts the personalities of historical figures through elaborate stitches and embellishments. Using only black and white threads, Chris Niver carefully “draws” individual figures in isolated situations and Deborah Slabeck Baker uses graphic illustrations to portray her ideas. Diem Chau stitches her stories on hard surfaces like coffee cups and plates and Caycez Zavaglia brings to the exhibition emotion packed portraits created through many layers of thread. Ray Materson creates small playing card size detailed embroideries that tell personal stories of his life experiences. This exhibition presents embroidery that expands our appreciation and understanding of needlework, now in the mainstream of contemporary art.
