Bring vibrant color and imagery to your metalwork through the art of vitreous enamel. In this class, students will learn to apply enamel to copper and explore a variety of surface decoration techniques, including enamel sifting and the use of custom enamel decals. Decals can be created from black-and-white photographs, prints, or original drawings, allowing each student to incorporate personal imagery into their work. By combining these techniques, participants will create a one-of-a-kind enameled piece. No previous enameling experience is required unless otherwise noted.

Introduce texture and imagery to your metalwork through the art of etching. In this class, students will learn a variety of resist techniques, including the use of PnP paper to transfer photographic images onto metal. Once the resist is applied, the metal is submerged in a mordant bath, which etches away the exposed areas of the surface while leaving the protected image intact. These techniques allow students to create richly textured, highly detailed, and uniquely personal designs on metal. No previous etching experience is required unless otherwise noted.

Discover the art of weaving in this beginner-friendly, six-week course designed for students of all experience levels. Learn the fundamentals of weaving on a four-harness floor loom, including how to warp the loom, read weaving drafts, and create a variety of woven structures and patterns. More experienced weavers can expand their skills by exploring advanced techniques such as designing original pattern drafts or incorporating tapestry weaving.

Throughout the course, you'll develop an understanding of project planning, fiber and material selection, color interaction, and texture while creating functional or decorative pieces such as scarves, towels, table runners, or wall hangings. Dive into the world of glass bead making in this fun and fast-paced 3-hour workshop! You’ll learn how to safely operate a torch to melt glass and create perfectly round beads. As you gain hands-on experience, you'll explore different shapes and enhance your beads with decorative techniques such as adding dots, striping colors, and pulling glass stringers (heating and pulling glass to create a thin elongated piece of glass) to create unique designs. Whether you're a beginner or looking to expand your skills, this workshop will provide you with the tools and techniques to craft a collection of beautiful, one-of-a-kind glass beads. By the end of the session, you’ll have a treasure trove of beads to wear or use in your own jewelry creations! Beads will go through an annealing process to temper the glass for strength—your instructor will set a pickup time. Traveling? We can mail your beads to you!

Students will spend 6 classes sculpting various species of cacti and succulents out of glass using a stationary torch.  Both soft glass (104 COE) and borosilicate glass (33 COE) will be used to achieve different effects.  This is a beginner-friendly class, but intermediate-to-advanced lampworkers are welcome!  Techniques include mixing and blending colors, layering, encasing, adding mini flower implosions, using tools to shape the glass, and using hand-pulled cane to add embellishments.  On the last day, you will also learn how to etch glass and process the pieces, attaching "root systems" and mixing gravel with epoxy for a mixed media project.

We will start with the basics of sculpting with glass, both on a mandrel (with soft glass) and off-mandrel (with borosilicate glass), focusing on heat control, layering colors, using specialized shaping tools, and creating texture. Dive into the world of glass fish, coral, cephalopods, crustaceans, and jellyfish! Use sculpting tools, complex cane patterns, and heat control to ensure your projects go swimmingly.  In this 6-week course, students will go from basic beginner-friendly techniques to more advanced ways to sculpt soft glass (104 COE) into realistic animals.  On the last day, you will also learn how to mount your glass sea creatures on stands, hang them in a waterless aquarium, and suspend them in miniature specimen jars.

In this class, you’ll learn the fundamentals of ceramic glazing, from understanding the components of glazes to creating your own unique recipes. You'll discover how to use a gram scale to measure materials accurately and explore the different clays, fluxes, and oxides that form the foundation of glazes. Throughout the course, we’ll dive into the effects of oxidation (where the glaze is exposed to oxygen during firing) and reduction (where the oxygen is reduced in the kiln atmosphere) and observe how these processes affect the final look of your pieces in both gas and electric kilns. You’ll also receive hands-on demonstrations of different glazing techniques, including dipping, pouring, brushing, and spraying, to help you apply glazes like a pro.

Take your glass beadmaking skills to the next level by learning how to create lightweight, blown hollow glass beads in the flame. Designed for students with prior beadmaking experience, this two-week workshop introduces techniques for forming hollow shapes and expanding your creative possibilities with flame-worked glass. Students will begin by creating coiled glass disks on a mandrel before learning how to join them into hollow forms. From there, you'll progress to using specialty "puffy" mandrels to create larger, blown hollow beads with greater control and consistency. The workshop will also cover techniques for adding decorative surface elements, color, and texture to enhance your finished beads. By the end of the course, you'll have the skills and confidence to incorporate hollow beadmaking into your own lampworking practice.

Using intense heat from a torch, along with a little gravity, students can create gorgeous one-of-a-kind glass pendants, cabochons, and turtles from borosilicate glass. Glass likes to follow the direction of heat. When a pattern of broken glass is heated at just the right angle, magic happens: a flower forms inside of a blob of clear glass, which forms a convex lens that magnifies it.

Step into the forge and learn the fundamentals of blacksmithing while creating a functional fire poker. In this hands-on evening workshop, students will practice core forging techniques such as drawing out, tapering, bending, and twisting while shaping hot steel at the anvil.

Guided by an experienced blacksmith, you’ll transform raw metal into a custom tool perfect for tending the fireplace or outdoor fire pit. Along the way, you’ll gain an introduction to hammer control, working safely with heat, and finishing your piece with durability in mind.

No prior experience is required—just a willingness to swing a hammer and get sparks flying!

Safety Note: This workshop is for ages 16+. Blacksmithing involves working with hot metal, so safety will be our top priority. All materials are included in your materials fee.  All necessary safety gear will be provided, including safety glasses, gloves, and aprons. You must wear close-toed shoes, and natural fiber clothing and long hair must be tied back to ensure your safety while working with the forge.

This is an introduction to the techniques, materials, and tools used to make glass marbles on a torch. Students will melt and shape glass in a 3,000ºF flame, using both hands to twirl the glass until it forms a perfect sphere, incorporating different colors and patterns throughout the process. Students will learn heat control, cold vs. hot connections, and how to use graphite marble molds.
